If you’ve ever had a card reading or considered learning to read cards yourself, you’ve probably come across both Tarot and Oracle decks. While they share similarities, they serve different purposes and offer unique insights. If you're wondering which deck is right for you, let’s explore the differences, what types of questions each is best for, and how to choose a deck that resonates with you.
The Tarot
Tarot is a structured system with a rich history dating back to the 15th century. A traditional Tarot deck consists of 78 cards divided into two main sections:

The Major Arcana (22 cards): These represent major life themes, spiritual lessons, and significant turning points. Each card carries a unique meaning, from The Fool (new beginnings, spontaneity) to The World (completion, fulfillment). Some key cards include:
The Magician – Manifestation, resourcefulness.
The High Priestess – Intuition, mystery.
The Empress – Nurturing, abundance.
The Tower – Sudden upheaval, transformation.
The Star – Hope, inspiration.
The Minor Arcana (56 cards): These reflect day-to-day experiences and are further divided into four suits, each representing a different aspect of life:
Cups: Emotions, relationships, intuition.
Wands: Creativity, passion, action.
Swords: Thoughts, challenges, intellect.
Pentacles: Material aspects, career, stability.
Tarot follows a set structure, meaning that no matter which deck you choose, the foundational meanings of the cards remain consistent. Tarot readings can provide deep insight into life’s patterns, challenges, and guidance on personal growth.
Oracle Cards

Oracle cards, on the other hand, are more free-flowing and do not follow a strict structure. Each Oracle deck is unique and created by its author, meaning that:
The number of cards in a deck can vary (some have 30 cards, others 60+).
The themes are diverse—decks may focus on angels, moon phases, spirit animals, affirmations, or personal empowerment.
There are no fixed suits or defined meanings; interpretations often depend on the creator’s guidance and your own intuition.
Because of their flexibility, Oracle cards are wonderful for daily guidance, affirmations, and spiritual messages without needing to memorise a complex system.
What Type of Questions Can They Help With?
Both Tarot and Oracle cards can be used for self-reflection, guidance, and insight, but they shine in different areas:
Tarot is ideal for:
In-depth exploration of situations and patterns.
Understanding past, present, and future influences.
Gaining clarity on complex decisions.
Oracle cards are great for:
Quick, uplifting messages of encouragement.
Connecting with spiritual guidance and intuition.
Offering inspiration and affirmations for daily life.
Many readers, including myself, love to use both! Tarot can provide a structured deep dive into a question, while Oracle cards offer gentle and intuitive messages to complement the reading.
How to Choose a Deck for Yourself
If you’re interested in learning to read cards, choosing a deck is a personal journey. Here are some tips:
Follow Your Intuition – If a deck speaks to you visually or emotionally, trust that feeling! The imagery should resonate with you.
Consider Your Goals – Do you want a structured system to study (Tarot) or something more fluid for daily inspiration (Oracle)?
Check the Guidebook – Some decks come with detailed guidebooks, which can be helpful for beginners.
Look at the Art & Theme – Since you’ll be working with these cards regularly, choose a deck with artwork and themes that inspire you.
Start Simple – If you’re drawn to Tarot but feel intimidated, start with an easy-to-understand deck, such as the Rider-Waite-Smith or a beginner-friendly Oracle deck.
Whether you choose Tarot, Oracle, or both, working with cards is a beautiful way to connect with your intuition and the Universe’s wisdom. The best deck is the one that feels right for you, so explore, experiment, and enjoy the journey of self-discovery!
My favourite tarot deck is The Light Seers Tarot by Chris Anne. I have been using this deck for both client and personal readings for over 5 years and I have yet to come across another deck that gives such accurate and insightful messages. The imagery is modern and colourful with easy to interpret messages, so great for beginners and seasoned readers alike.
When it comes to oracle cards I am creating quite a collection with well over 15 different types of decks ranging from Charka's, Goddess, Spirit Animals to Medicine Heart. My collection started with the Work Your Light Oracle by Rebecca Campbell and I think this is a great beginner deck for anyone interested in Oracle card readings. The imagery is ethereal and beautiful with pinks and blues being the main colours. I have a soft spot for this deck and often use it in tandem with my Tarot deck for deeper insight and guidance.
I would love to know what your favourite decks are as I'm always open to adding to my collection!
